SSC GD Constable Salary 2026: In-hand Pay, Allowances and Promotion
On this page

An SSC GD constable is paid on Pay Level 3 (₹21,700 to ₹69,100) of the 7th Pay Commission matrix. Add Dearness Allowance, now 63% of basic pay, plus house rent and transport allowance, and a new constable's gross pay comes to roughly ₹38,000 to ₹48,000 a month, depending on the posting and whether government housing is provided.

This page breaks the SSC GD salary down line by line, works out the in-hand amount for different kinds of postings, and covers allowances, pension, promotions and what the 8th Pay Commission may change.

Key Takeaways

  • Constable (GD) in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB and SSF, and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles, all start at a basic pay of ₹21,700 (Level 3).
  • DA is 63% of basic pay from 1 July 2026, after the Union Cabinet approved a 3% hike on 28 October 2026. On ₹21,700, that is ₹13,671 a month.
  • Estimated in-hand pay at joining is about ₹34,800 to ₹44,200 a month after the NPS deduction, depending on city class and housing.
  • Postings in hard areas add Risk and Hardship Allowance. Ration money, uniform allowance, LTC, medical cover and CAPF canteen facilities come on top.
  • New recruits are covered by NPS, with the option of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which the Centre introduced from 1 April 2025.
  • The 8th Pay Commission has not submitted its report yet, so no new pay figure for constables is official.

SSC GD Salary Structure: Line by Line

Basic pay

₹21,700 at joining. This is the first cell of Level 3, and the other main parts of your pay (DA, HRA and the NPS deduction) are worked out on it.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

DA is revised twice a year, with effect from January and July. The Cabinet raised it from 60% to 63% on 28 October 2026, with effect from 1 July 2026. At 63%, DA on ₹21,700 is ₹13,671 a month. Arrears for the months since July are paid as per the government's payment schedule.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

HRA depends on the city class of your posting: 30% of basic in X-class cities (₹6,510), 20% in Y-class cities (₹4,340) and 10% in Z-class towns (₹2,170). It is not paid while you live in government accommodation, and many CAPF jawans live in barracks or unit quarters, especially in the early years.

Transport Allowance (TA)

For Level 3, TA is ₹3,600 a month in the 19 bigger cities notified for the higher rate (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Patna, Lucknow and Jaipur are among them) and ₹1,800 elsewhere. DA is paid on TA too, so the actual amount is ₹5,868 or ₹2,934.

SSC GD In-hand Salary (Estimate)

Here is how the numbers add up for a new constable at ₹21,700 basic pay with DA at 63%. All figures are monthly, in rupees.

ComponentX-class city (higher TA)Y-class cityZ-class townGovernment housing (no HRA)
Basic pay21,70021,70021,70021,700
DA (63%)13,67113,67113,67113,671
HRA6,5104,3402,1700
TA with DA5,8682,9342,9342,934
Gross pay47,74942,64540,47538,305
NPS (10% of basic + DA)3,5373,5373,5373,537
In-hand (approx.)44,21239,10836,93834,768

The Y-class, Z-class and government-housing columns use the lower TA rate. Small deductions such as group insurance and welfare fund contributions reduce these figures slightly. Risk and Hardship Allowance, ration money and other allowances are not included, so the real take-home for many jawans is higher.

The government also puts 14% of basic pay plus DA (about ₹4,952 a month at this level) into your NPS account. This does not reach your hand, but it builds your pension.

Allowances and Benefits for SSC GD Constables

  • Risk and Hardship Allowance: paid for postings in high-risk or hard areas such as Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East and Left Wing Extremism-affected districts, as per the 7th CPC Risk and Hardship Matrix.
  • Ration Money Allowance: CAPF personnel get a monthly ration money allowance, and the rate is revised from time to time.
  • Dress allowance: a yearly allowance for uniform and kit.
  • Leave Travel Concession (LTC): travel support for visits to your home town and other places in India, as per central rules.
  • Medical care: force hospitals, plus the Ayushman CAPF scheme for treatment of the jawan and family at empanelled hospitals.
  • CAPF canteens: Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar outlets sell household goods at lower prices.
  • Housing: barracks or family quarters, subject to availability. HRA is paid when government housing is not provided.
  • Children Education Allowance: for up to two children, as per central government rules.

SSC GD Pay Matrix: How Basic Pay Grows

Level 3 has 40 cells, from ₹21,700 to ₹69,100. Each annual increment moves you one cell up, which is roughly a 3% rise. The increment falls on 1 January or 1 July, depending on your date of joining.

Year of serviceBasic pay (₹)
Year 1 (joining)21,700
Year 222,400
Year 323,100
Year 423,800
Year 524,500
Year 625,200
Year 726,000
Year 826,800
Year 927,600
Year 1028,400

DA keeps rising on top of this twice a year, so gross pay grows faster than the basic pay column suggests.

Promotion and Career Growth

RankPay levelPay scale
Constable (GD)Level 3₹21,700 to ₹69,100
Head Constable (GD)Level 4₹25,500 to ₹81,100
Assistant Sub-Inspector (GD)Level 5₹29,200 to ₹92,300
Sub-Inspector (GD)Level 6₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400
Inspector (GD)Level 7₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400
Assistant Commandant (through a departmental exam)Level 10₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500

How fast you move up depends on vacancies in your force, departmental courses and exams, and your service record. If promotion does not come on time, the MACP scheme gives a financial upgrade to the next pay level at 10, 20 and 30 years of service. Some forces also fill a share of Assistant Commandant posts through a limited departmental exam for serving personnel. Assam Rifles uses its own rank names, but its pay levels follow the same pattern.

Will the 8th Pay Commission Change SSC GD Salary?

Yes, but not yet. The Centre constituted the 8th Central Pay Commission in November 2025 under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and gave it 18 months to report. As of November 2026, the report has not been submitted, so the fitment factor and the new pay matrix are undecided. Any figure you see online for a constable's new basic pay is a projection.

Many expect the revised pay to apply from 1 January 2026 with arrears, but that will be settled only when the Cabinet accepts the report. Until then, DA under the 7th CPC structure keeps rising every six months.

Is SSC GD Constable a Good Job?

For a 10th-pass candidate, it is among the better-paying central government jobs on offer: a starting gross of roughly ₹38,000 to ₹48,000 a month, regular pay revisions, medical cover and a clear ladder up to Inspector. The trade-off is real too. Postings rotate across the country, often in border or conflict areas, and long spells away from family come with the work. Go in knowing both sides.

Conclusion

The SSC GD salary starts at ₹21,700 basic pay, and with DA at 63% a new constable takes home roughly ₹34,800 to ₹44,200 a month before posting-based allowances. The figure rises with every DA revision and annual increment, and the 8th Pay Commission should lift it further once its report is accepted.
