SSC GD Constable Eligibility: Age, Education, Physical Standards
On this page

Want to wear the uniform of the BSF, CRPF, ITBP or Assam Rifles? Before you start the running practice and mock tests, make sure you clear the first hurdle: SSC GD Constable eligibility. This guide covers who can apply. It explains the education you need, how age limits and relaxations work, nationality and attempts, the physical standards and the documents to keep ready.

We've used the Staff Selection Commission's own notices wherever we could. If we couldn't check a figure against an official SSC document, we've written "check the official notification" instead of guessing. That way nothing here will mislead you on exam day.

Key Takeaways

  • The 2026 cycle is in its later stages. SSC declared the Computer Based Examination (CBE) result on 12.10.2026, and the final answer keys and marks can be seen until 17.11.2026 (5 pm).
  • Watch ssc.gov.in for the next cycle's notice. Use only that notice for dates, age limits and vacancies.
  • The basic qualification is Matriculation (Class 10) from a recognised board. In the 2026 cycle, you had to hold it as on 01-01-2026.
  • Vacancies in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles are allotted by domicile. SSF vacancies are filled on an all-India basis.
  • The CBE is followed by the PET/PST, the medical examination and document verification, all run by the CAPFs.

SSC GD Constable Eligibility at a Glance

What to check right now

If you took the 2026 exam, the next stage is close. SSC held the CBE for the 2026 cycle from 27.04.2026 to 30.05.2026 and declared the result on 12.10.2026. The PET/PST call letters for shortlisted candidates come from the nodal CAPF, which is the CRPF. So keep an eye on rect.crpf.gov.in as well. SSC has also uploaded the final answer keys, question papers and marks. You can log in and see them from 03.11.2026 (5 pm) to 17.11.2026 (5 pm).

If you're aiming for the next cycle, here's what to do. Reports say SSC's annual calendar placed the next GD notice around this time of year. However, we couldn't find the new notice on SSC's official pages when we wrote this. Dates, vacancies and eligibility details count only once SSC publishes them. Check the Notice Board on SSC's website regularly to get the notice the day it comes out.

Check the latest SSC GD notice on ssc.gov.in

To get a feel for how a cycle runs, look at the 2026 one. The notice was published on 01.12.2025 and applications ran from 01.12.2025 to 31.12.2025. The correction window was open from 08.01.2026 to 10.01.2026.

Forces covered

The GD exam fills General Duty posts in these forces:

  • Border Security Force (BSF)
  • Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
  • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
  • Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
  • Secretariat Security Force (SSF)
  • Assam Rifles: the post is Rifleman (GD)
  • Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB): Sepoy. Earlier cycles included it, but the 2026 notice's title names only the CAPFs, SSF and Assam Rifles. Check whether the next notice includes it.

Educational Qualification

Class 10 is the key requirement

You need to have passed Matriculation (Class 10) from a recognised board. That's one reason the GD exam is so popular: you don't need a higher degree. If you have a higher qualification you can still apply, because the requirement is a minimum.

The cut-off date matters

SSC's notice fixes the date by which you must hold the qualification. In the 2026 cycle that date was 01-01-2026. The new notice will give its own date, so check it the moment the notice is out.

Waiting for your Class 10 result?

The notice says you must hold the qualification "as on" the cut-off date. So the safe reading is that your Class 10 must be passed by that date. We couldn't confirm whether the notice makes an exception for candidates whose results are pending. Read the educational qualification paragraph of the new notice before you apply. If you're unsure, don't risk it: an ineligible application can be cancelled at any stage, even after you clear the CBE.

Age Limit and Cut-off Date

Minimum and maximum age

For the minimum and maximum age and the date on which age is counted, check the official notification. SSC prints both in the age-limit paragraph of each cycle's notice, and the reference date can change from cycle to cycle. Only one rule matters: the one in the notice you are applying under.

How to work out your own eligibility

You can check your eligibility in under a minute:

  1. Find the reference date in the notice.
  2. Latest allowed date of birth: go back from the reference date by the minimum age. You must be born on or before that date.
  3. Earliest allowed date of birth: go back from the reference date by the maximum age. The notice lists the exact "born not before" date. You must be born on or after it.
  4. Add your relaxation, if you belong to a category that gets one. This pushes the earliest allowed date further back.

Always use the date of birth on your Class 10 certificate. Type it into the application exactly as printed, because it will be checked against that certificate at document verification.

Age Relaxation by Category

Relaxation table

Relaxation raises only the upper age limit, never the lower one. For the number of years for each category, check the official notification.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
Scheduled Castes / Scheduled TribesCheck the official notification
Other Backward Classes (OBC)Check the official notification
Ex-servicemenCheck the official notification (reports say it is worked out after deducting military service from actual age)
Children and dependants of victims of the 1984 riots or the 2002 Gujarat communal riots (separately for Unreserved, OBC and SC/ST)Check the official notification
Any other category listed in the noticeCheck the official notification

Special groups

Reports say past GD notices gave separate relaxation to children and dependants of people killed in the 1984 riots or the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. The amount differs for unreserved, OBC and SC/ST candidates. If this applies to you, read that clause of the new notice carefully.

Certificates you need to claim relaxation

  • SC/ST: a caste certificate from the competent authority.
  • OBC: an OBC certificate in the format and validity the notice asks for.
  • Ex-servicemen: discharge papers or a service certificate showing your length of service.
  • Riot-victim dependants: the certificate issued by the authority named in the notice.

If you claim a category in your application, you must prove it at document verification. If you can't, you can lose the relaxation or the candidature itself.

Nationality, Gender and Number of Attempts

Nationality

Reports say candidates must be Indian citizens. If the notice names any other category of eligible persons, it will spell it out, so check that section if your case is unusual.

Both men and women can apply

The GD exam is open to both men and women. SSC shortlists them separately: in the 2026 cycle, it published List-I for female and List-II for male candidates going to the next stage.

State-wise and area-wise vacancies

This matters a lot for your chances. SSC's notice says vacancies for Constable (GD) in the CAPFs and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles are based on domicile. Some vacancies are also reserved for border districts and districts affected by Naxal or militancy problems. SSF vacancies, on the other hand, are filled on an all-India basis. Your domicile certificate therefore decides which state's vacancies you compete for.

Is there a limit on attempts?

We couldn't find an official rule capping the number of attempts. In practice, the age limit decides how many times you can sit the exam: you can keep trying as long as you are within it. Check the new notice for any change.

Physical Standards and Medical Requirements

The physical stage is where many well-prepared candidates fall short, so start training early. The PET/PST is conducted by the CAPFs, not SSC.

Physical Standard Test (PST)

ChestMeasured unexpanded and expanded; check the official notificationReports say not measuredReports say: ST and certain hill and regional groups

Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

The PET is a timed race. It's qualifying, which means you must finish within the time limit. Reports say the distance and time differ for men and women. They also say there are separate, shorter standards for candidates from the Ladakh region. For the exact distances and times, check the official notification. Then train until you can finish comfortably inside the limit, not just at it.

Medical standards

Shortlisted candidates go through the DME and, if they ask for it, the RME. Reports say doctors check eyesight and look for conditions such as knock knees, flat feet and colour blindness. For the exact vision standard and the full list of conditions that disqualify you, check the official notification. If you wear glasses or have a known condition, see a doctor well in advance.

Documents Needed at Application and Verification

At the application stage

  • Class 10 certificate: for your name and date of birth.
  • Identity proof: keep the ID you register with handy, because you'll need the same one later.
  • Photograph and signature: follow the format and size the notice gives. If they don't match, your application can be rejected.

At document verification

  • Caste or category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS), in the format the notice asks for.
  • Domicile certificate: essential, because vacancies are allotted by domicile.
  • Ex-servicemen documents, if you claim that status.
  • NCC certificate, if you claim bonus marks. In the 2026 cycle, SSC's result notice listed the bonus as 5% of the maximum marks (8 marks) for a 'C' certificate, 3% (4.8 marks) for 'B' and 2% (3.2 marks) for 'A'.
  • Any certificate for a special category, such as riot-victim dependants or border and affected-district residents.

Avoid name and date-of-birth mismatches

  • Copy your name exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate, letter for letter.
  • If your name changed (after marriage, for example), keep the gazette notification or affidavit ready.
  • Make sure every certificate is in the right format and valid on the dates the notice sets.
  • Save a PDF of your submitted form and use the same details at every stage.

Preparing Once You Are Eligible

Once you know you're eligible, put your energy into the CBE. Reports say it has four parts: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi. The CBE result decides who goes on to the PET/PST, so a strong score matters.

These resources match the CBE's GK and awareness section:

ResourceUse it for
Static General Knowledge (Facts + PYQ) \UPSC\Railways\Banking\SSCStatic GK facts with previous-year questions to revise quickly
Objective General Knowledge for All SSC, Railways, and other Competitive ExamsMCQ practice in the SSC style for the GK section
वस्तुनिष्ट सामान्य ज्ञान (Objective General language) for All SSC, Railways, and other Competitive ExamsThe same objective GK practice for Hindi-medium aspirants
Aadhunik Bharat ka Itihas \आधुनिक भारत का इतिहास \For UPSC \JPSC \BPSC \UPPSC \SSCModern Indian history in Hindi, a frequent GK topic

You can browse more books for competitive exams for reasoning and maths. Take a timed online test series every week to build speed and accuracy. Stay on top of the awareness questions with daily current affairs.

A simple weekly plan:

  • Daily: 30 minutes of current affairs, plus your running practice.
  • Alternate days: maths and reasoning practice sets.
  • Weekends: one full mock test, followed by an honest look at your mistakes.

Conclusion: Your SSC GD Constable Eligibility Checklist

Checking your SSC GD Constable eligibility early saves you from heartbreak later. Before you apply, make sure of these:

  • You will have passed Class 10 by the cut-off date in the notice.
  • Your date of birth falls within the age limit, including any relaxation you can claim.
  • Your certificates are ready: caste, domicile, NCC and ex-servicemen, as they apply to you.
  • Your fitness is improving week by week.

After that, keep refreshing SSC's notice board for the next cycle. Read the notice from start to finish, and prepare with confidence. You can do this. Good luck!
