The big date is close. The JTET 2026 exam is on Sunday, 1 November 2026, five days from today. If you are still deciding whether this exam is for you, or you are taking it this weekend, this guide gives you the basics and tells you where each detail is covered in more depth on our site.

What Is JTET and Who Conducts It

The purpose of a TET

Under the national framework set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), anyone who wants to teach Classes 1 to 8 must pass a Teacher Eligibility Test. A state TET such as JTET checks that you have the subject knowledge and teaching skills needed in a classroom. It sets a minimum standard. It is not a ranking for jobs.

JTET does this for Jharkhand. It decides whether you are eligible to teach primary and upper primary classes in the state's government schools.

The conducting body

The Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), Ranchi, conducts JTET. JAC issues the notification, runs the application process, releases admit cards and holds the exam. Reports say the 2026 exam follows new rules for the test, the JHTET Rules 2026.

A long gap between cycles

Some background helps you understand why this cycle has drawn so much attention. Reports say the last JTET before this one was held in 2016. A cycle notified in 2024 accepted applications in July and August 2024. JAC later cancelled it because the 2019 exam rules were being changed.

The new rules led to the 28 March 2026 notification. JAC also issued Notice No. 54/2026 on 31 July 2026 for people who registered in 2024 but whose mobile number or email ID no longer worked. These candidates had to complete a validation check between 1 and 8 August 2026 before they could apply.

Paper 1 and Paper 2: Which Classes Each Qualifies For

JTET has two papers, one for each teaching level. Pick the paper that matches the classes you want to teach.

FeaturePaper 1Paper 2
Classes1 to 5 (primary)6 to 8 (upper primary)
Target postsPrimary teachersUpper primary teachers
SubjectsChild Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics, Environmental StudiesChild Development & Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, plus one subject section (Maths & Science, Social Studies, or Language)
Exam shift (2026)Second shift, afternoonFirst shift, morning

Who should take both papers?

You need both papers if you want to be eligible for Classes 1 to 8. You can only do this if you meet the qualification for each paper. In 2026 the two papers are in different shifts on the same day, so one candidate can sit both.

If you are only sure about one level, focus on that paper. You can add the other in a later cycle.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility in Brief

The official notification sets out the exact rules. Here is a short outline of what reports say about it.

Paper 1 (Classes 1–5)

  • Class 12 with at least 50% marks plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed).
  • Class 12 with at least 45% plus a 2-year D.El.Ed, for candidates admitted before 9 December 2007 under the NCTE Regulations 2002.
  • Class 12 with at least 50% plus a 4-year B.El.Ed.
  • Class 12 with at least 50% plus a 2-year Diploma in Special Education.

Paper 2 (Classes 6–8)

  • Graduation with at least 50% marks plus a B.Ed.
  • Class 12 with at least 50% plus a 4-year B.El.Ed.
  • Class 12 with at least 50% plus a 4-year integrated course (B.A./B.Sc.Ed or B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed).
  • Graduation with at least 50% plus a B.Ed (Special Education).

Reports also say SC, ST, OBC, Divyang (PwD) and PVTG candidates get a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks needed in these qualifications. Some reports say final-year students in a qualifying course can apply provisionally.

Age limit

We could not confirm the age limit and relaxations from an official source, so check the official notification. Some reports say there is no upper age limit.

For documents and the full list of accepted qualifications, see JTET Eligibility: Paper 1 & 2 Qualification, Age, Documents.

Exam Stages and Pattern

Stages from start to finish

  1. Notification: JAC publishes the rules, dates and fee (28 March 2026 this cycle).
  2. Online application: You register, upload documents and pay the fee. This cycle's window is closed.

  4. Written exam: One offline sitting per paper (1 November 2026).
  5. Answer key and result: No dates yet, so check the official notification.
  6. Certificate: Candidates who reach the qualifying marks receive the JTET certificate.

Exam pattern

Both papers follow the same basic format. Each has 150 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each, for 150 marks in total, and lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. You mark answers on an OMR sheet. Reports say there is no negative marking and the question paper is printed in both Hindi and English.

Admit Card and Exam Day

How the admit card is released

JAC released the JTET admit card online on 15 October 2026. It is not sent by post. Log in on the official website with your registration details, then download and print it. Check your name, photo, paper, shift and exam centre. Report any mistake to JAC straight away.

Shift timings and reporting

Most reports give the shifts in this order. One report has them the other way round, so go by the shift printed on your admit card. Reports say you must reach the centre two hours early, and the gate closes 30 minutes before the exam starts. Carry your admit card and your original Aadhaar card.

After JTET: Certificate Validity and Teacher Recruitment

Eligibility, not a job

This is the most important point to understand. JTET is a qualifying test. Passing it makes you eligible to apply for teaching posts, but it does not give you a job. Reports say the notification itself makes this clear.

How long the certificate is valid

Reports say the JTET certificate is valid for life under the 2026 rules. Earlier certificates were valid for 7 years. Reports also say Clause 13 of the new rules gives lifetime validity to certificates from the 2013 and 2016 exams. Confirm this in the official notification before you rely on it.

How it leads to recruitment

When the state announces teacher vacancies for Classes 1 to 8 in government schools, a valid TET certificate is one of the conditions for applying. Selection happens through a separate recruitment process with its own notification, so watch for those announcements after your result.

How to Start Preparing

Plan with the syllabus and past papers

  • Start with the official syllabus. Turn each section in the pattern table into a list of topics, and tick topics off as you finish them.
  • Solve past papers. They show you how questions are framed, especially in Child Development & Pedagogy, which appears in both papers.
  • Find your weak sections. Give them more time, but keep revising your strong ones.
  • Practise in your shift. Take full mocks at the same time as your real paper, morning for Paper 2 and afternoon for Paper 1.
  • Attempt every question. With no negative marking, as reports say, an educated guess can only add to your score.

You can see the full range of our Books for competitive exams, and take timed practice papers through our Online test series.

Conclusion: Your JTET Overview in One Place

To sum up this JTET overview: JAC conducts the test. Paper 1 is for Classes 1–5 and Paper 2 is for Classes 6–8. Each paper has 150 one-mark questions and lasts two and a half hours. Passing gives you eligibility to teach, not a job.

The 2026 exam is on 1 November. Download your admit card, revise the core sections and go in calmly. If you are preparing for a future cycle, start with the syllabus and past papers, and build a steady practice routine. You've got this!
